What is Virtual Counseling?

Is teletherapy a new thing?

Things have definitely changed since 2020. Prior to that, I had never done teletherapy but now it’s the norm.

How many teletherapy sessions do you have regularly?

About a third of my sessions are virtual while the other two-thirds are in-person.

What are some advantages of teletherapy?

  • It opens up opportunities to see a therapist that is the best fit for you within your state versus only those in your geographical area.
  • It provides options for those who are immuno-compromised, unable to drive, homebound, or busy with work to participate in therapy.

Does it work?

I would say that teletherapy is just as impactful as in-person with a few exceptions.

What are some disadvantages to teletherapy?

  • For either person, starting at a computer even more than we already do can be tiresome.
  • The loss of the real human connection that we can only experience in-person.
  • When it comes to anxiety and depression, it can enable isolation and reinforce ideas related to fear.

Going to therapy is so much more than an hour session, it is engaging with the community outside of your comfort zone!

Ok, I am interested. How do I do this even if I am not great with technology?

  • You (the client) will receive a link for your session via email or text.
  • You open the link and will see the information for your appointment in the virtual waiting room.
  • The therapist will join the same session link from their end, and you will see their smiling face!

How can I prepare for an appointment?

  • Ensuring privacy is important and can be challenging. People are usually in their home office, bedroom, or car in their driveway.
  • You want to ensure that you have a box of tissue and a glass of water with you.
  • Make sure you are wearing comfortable and appropriate clothing. Remember I can see you!
  • Think ahead about what you would like to work on. If you’re not sure at first, that’s ok! Your therapist can ask you some questions to get you started, especially at the first appointment.

Whether in-person or online, be ready to engage when the session begins!
